COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second year in a row the University of Richmond women's soccer team played spoiler, upsetting No. 14 Maryland 1-0 Thursday night at Ludwig Field. Last season, the then-No. 9 Terps were stunned by the Spiders, by the same 1-0 score.
Richmond (1-1) scored the game's only goal when senior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) took a pass from junior Anne Rieser (Milddletown, Md./Middletown) on a fast break and lofted a shot over Maryland keeper and Richmond, Va. native Ali Wolff at the 65:53 mark.
Richmond's goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was magnificent in goal recording 10 saves. The Terps (2-1) outshot the Spiders 17-6 for the game and 11-2 in the second stanza.
Richmond opens its home campaign Thursday, September 13 when the Spiders entertain East Carolina. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond.
