Lester Tharpe was a crack Spider runner, setting South Atlantic records as a half miler, quarter miler and miler. He also held the record for the mile (4:22.6) for 42 years, plus the 440 record for 31 years.
Tharpe trained for the 1928 Olympics, but an injury prevented his participation. Tharpe attended Fork Union Military Academy before coming to UR. He was inducted into the FUMA Hall of Fame in 1997. He won 58 out of 60 career races at Richmond.
