Hillary Tuwei, a native of Kenya, was one of the greatest track and field runners in UR history. Kenya's Athlete of the Year in 1975 and its track and cross country champion from 1974-76, Tuwei was at the University of Richmond from 1976-80 and was captain of the track team in 1980. He was a seven-time NCAA All-American, four times in outdoor track in the 3000 meter steeplechase, twice in indoor track in the 3-mile run and once in cross country. For four years he was undefeated in state competition in steeplechase and cross country. Tuwei finished fourth in the NCAA Steeplechase in 1977 and 1978 and finished third in 1979. He ranked seventh in the world in the steeplechase in 1979. He won the 1979 Richmond Newspapers Marathon in 2:22.26, a record at the time, the day after he won the State Cross Country Meet. he holds school records for the 5,000 meters (13:33.6 in Europe in 1979) and 10,000 meters (28:35.8 at the Colonial Relays in 1980) as well as the steeplechase (8:22.5 in Italy in 1980).
