Built in 1972 through the generosity of the E. Claiborne Robins family, the Robins Center has been one of the premier small-school college basketball arenas in the nation for more than 50 years.
The facility is much more than a basketball arena, however. The Robins Center has been home to addresses by world leaders, University commencements, WTA Tour events, track competitions, water polo matches, concerts, a 1992 Presidential Debate, and more.
Dick Tarrant Court, named for the legendary Spiders coach who led Richmond to its first five NCAA Tournament appearances, was stripped to the boards and completely refinished in August 2024, resulting in the removal of the old women’s three-point line and a thinner jump-ball circle.
Renovations to the lower level of the building in 2018 resulted in the creation of the Blandford-Everett Student-Athlete Performance Center, which provides Richmond’s student-athletes with the latest strength and conditioning equipment, access to a nutrition fueling center, and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.
The facility underwent a $17 million renovation in 2013-2014, creating a more intimate game day atmosphere by decreasing the capacity of the arena from over 9,000 to 7,201. The renovations to the main arena of the Robins Center included new state-of-the-art LED lighting, a midnight blue painted ceiling, four video boards each measuring 15 feet by 32 feet, scoreboards, refurbished seats, new premium seating options, new terrace hospitality areas, a refinished and newly-painted court and renovated restrooms.
